On Tuesday, November 8th, vote for Peg Bumgardner: A hard-working citizen, volunteer and community benefactor

My Background Story

As an Illinois native, I moved to Atlanta with my family in 1971. I graduated from Walker High School in 1977 as Salutatorian and continued my education at Clayton Jr. College, now Clayton State University. Over the years, I’ve worked as a business consultant to small creative firms in metropolitan Atlanta.

In 1996, Mark, my husband, and I moved to Decatur, Georgia to start a family. When our son Luke was born in 1997, I chose to work part-time. In recent years I have refocused my consulting business to work with several additional clients.

Since my son Luke started school, I have volunteered much of my time throughout the City Schools of Decatur system. Volunteer positions have included Treasurer of the Clairemont Elementary School PTA, Secretary of the former Glennwood 4-5 Academy PTO, Chair of the PTO Pumpkin Sale and Treasurer of the Renfroe Middle School PTA.  In May of 2008, I was recognized as Glennwood Academy’s Volunteer of the Year.

When City Schools of Decatur became one of the first Charter Systems in the state of Georgia, I was elected as one of the parent members to Renfroe Middle School’s School Leadership Team (SLT). As a parent member, I have served on several district committees, the System Charter Leadership Team and Chair of the RMS SLT Communications Standing Committee. I am currently the Renfroe SLT Chair, completing a three-year term that will end in September 2011.

A long-time community volunteer, I have donated my time in several capacities. Some of those commitments include League Director, Vice President and President of Druid Hills Youth Sports, an all-volunteer organization dedicated to providing the opportunity for children to develop baseball skills. I volunteered at the Center for the Visually Impaired, working as a teacher’s assistant in their BEGIN program, an early childhood program that provides essential services to enhance development and potential for newborn to early school-aged children with severe visual impairments. Today, I continue to work beside Mark and Luke, as a volunteer with the Oakhurst Recovery Program (ORP), a long-term residential treatment program for homeless men with chemical dependency.

I look forward to the opportunity to lend my citizen-service leadership to the City Schools of Decatur. Thank you for taking the time to get to know more about me, and please vote for me in the General Election on November 8th.
